Since December of 2002, about
one week after the famous meltdown in New England,
I've been advocating on this page that the Miami Dolphins fire
Dave Wannstedt.
It ain't been easy.
When word got out about this page,
I was inundated with a whole bunch of nasty emails questioning
loyalty to my team and even questioning my errrrr, sexuality.
It seemed to some that if you have a negative opinion about
a football coach then you must be Gay. I'm wondering if those
same folks who called me those names are now getting the urge
to sing show tunes.
Well
the nasty emails stopped
coming after the 2003 season. Fans were starting to wake up
and realize that Dave Wannstedt was just not a very good coach.
On top of that, this past off-season was one for the history
books.
You know I could sit here and type some tripe about how I feel
a little bad for Wanny and that advocating the firing of some
guy on a web page wasn't very nice, but I ain't going to do
that. Instead I am going to tell a whole bunch of people who
kept their eyes shut about Wanny, I TOLD YOU SO!
Awwww but Bob, where's your humility?
Please!
I yelled as loud as I possibly
could for fans to just read the history of Dave Wannstedt when
he was with the Chicago Bears. It was right there in front of
us and it told us exactly how the Miami Dolphins would end up.
In the past 11 years, Dave took two franchises, two franchises
where he had personnel control and coaching control and ran
them into the ground. After that meltdown in New England, the
beginning of the end began. The Phins had a 2 game lead in the
division with just 5 or 6 games left and totally imploded.
No playoffs then, and no playoffs since.
Wanny and Jay!
Have you ever seen such devotion
as you've seen with Wanny and Jay? This I never simply got.
OK, maybe I got it a little. Here's why I think Wann's stuck
with Jay. He wanted to prove to all of us that yes, he can squeeze
water out of a rock and yes, he can turn a weed into a rose.
This stubbornness from Wanny made him throw all logic out the
window. And that my fellow Phin fans is Dave Wannstedt's Achilles
heel. Wanny never adapted his coaching style to the talent he
had on his team.
Wanny coached like he had Troy,
Emmett and Michael as weapons. He coached like he had an offensive
line equivalent to the same Champion Cowboys that he had back
at Dallas. He didn't.
Hence, Wanny's second Achilles
heel. His horrible record of evaluating talent. When Wayne H.
hired Dave and gave him control of all personnel decisions,
that should have been for many, including myself, the first
red flag of disaster. Again, go back to Wanny's days at Chicago
and study his personnel decisions. They were horrible.
It's all there folks. I think that
studying the history of Dave Wannstedt's head coaching career
should be a prerequisite for any Owner or GM looking for a head
coach. Do you want a nice guy to coach your team or do you want
a coach that wins football games?
Anyway, blah blah blah, blah
blah blah!
The end is very near for this web
site. Thank God!
I think that all signs are pointing to Steve Spurrier as the
next head coach. It's just a gut instinct that's probably being
perpetrated by the buzz in the media. If it's Steve and if they
bring in a strong General Manager who makes the personnel decisions,
I'll be OK with that.
I would like to say that this web
site's been fun doing. It's had its moment's thanks in part
to the nutty Dave Wannstedt regime. BUT all in all it's kind
of a downer having to comment on the demise of my team day in
and day out. It will be a relief to shut this thing down and
it will probably happen officially this Sunday morning. So
with
that said, thanks to all who have propped me up and kept me
going for the last couple of years.
Take care,
Bob
